Autumn is the perfect time to hit the road and head north to enjoy the autumn foliage up in California’s gold country. Highway 49 which runs along the western foothills of the Sierras is rich in California history. The route was numbered after the 49ers of the gold rush.
The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, was purely accidental. John Marshall was a foreman working on construction of a lumber mill along the America River for John Sutter. One day Marshall noticed shiny metal in the tailrace of the mill and after testing a nugget with lye soap, found the metal to be gold. The rest, as they say, is history.
