1968 – With the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

In February of 1968 the Beatles went to India to study with the Maharishi. Also there at the time were Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Donovan and the actress Mia Farrow and her sister Prudence. Ringo Starr left after only one week because he was unable to eat spicy food. Paul McCartney left about three weeks later, and John Lennon and George Harrison left about two weeks after that, after hearing rumors that the maharishi had made sexual advances to one of the women in the group.

What is often overlooked is the good influence the maharishi had on the group. For one thing, he weaned them from LSD. Not that they gave up drugs entirely. They continued to smoke marijuana, and a year later Lennon was using heroin. Whatever other powers transcendental meditation had, under its influence the boys wrote like demons. The main body of evidence is the White Album, the 19 time platinum and 10th best selling album of all time in the US.

Oh, the woman the Maharishi hit on?
