More Christmas

Music of the Season

Once a year, the Mission San Diego de Alcala has a Christmas Meditation. The first of the 21 missions established on El Camino Real hasn’t changed much since 1775 – except it does have electricity now. For two nights though, they turn off the lights in the chapel and a lovely glow comes from candles that have been placed on the alter and large candlabras.

The christmas story is narrated and the only music comes from the choir – and those of us sitting in the narrow rows of wooden pews. I don’t have the greatest voice, but when the time comes to sing the Hallelujah chorus I belt it out!

Hope you enjoy a wonderful version of Handel’s Hallelujah, Messiah  from The English Concert conducted by the delightful Trevor Pinnock.

More than 70 Hallelujahs in less time than it takes to boil an egg.
