Fast Food

Have it your way
Admit it. Every now and then the urge for a hamburger becomes overwhelming.  Nothing fancy, but a burger – exactly the way you like it.

Where can you order a burger that isn’t even on the menu? Who has a ‘secret menu’ only insiders know about? Where do they make it any way you want it?

Yeah, that’s right. In-N-Out.

In addition to the extensive ‘secret menu’, you can see who is preparing the food. No other fast food place, that I know of, has their entire food prep out in the open where you can watch everything going on – from cutting the potatoes for the fries to grilling the onions. No chance for horror stories like those from Taco Bell or KFC.

Last year, when California passed a law requiring all restaurants to post the calorie count of each item on the menu, I decided to check out my favorite cheeseburger with grilled onions served up at In-N-Out.

In & Out Cheeseburger with onions:
Calories: 480
Total fat (g): 27
Saturated fat (g): 10
Cholesterol (mg): 60
Sodium (mg): 1000
Sugar (g): 10

480 calories is about right for one full meal. The sodium is high – almost half of the 2400 daily recommended by the FDA. Cholesterol is less than a third of the 300 mg we should limit ourselves to. Not too bad.

If you have iced tea or diet Coke, and don’t order fries, you shouldn’t feel guilty for indulging yourself with an In-N-Out every now and then. Bon appetite!
