Phil Collins career took off in 1970, when he answered a classified ad the group Genesis had placed in the Melody Maker classifieds. The audition took place at the home of Peter Gabriel’s parents.
Collins arrived at the audition early which allowed him to listen to the other candidates perform songs from Genesis’ most recent album. While swimming in Gabriel’s parents’ pool, Collins memorized the pieces before his turn. The rest, as they say, is history.
In 1997 Collins moved to Switzerland after promising to leave the UK if the Labour Party was elected. Remember when Barbra Streisand and Alec Baldwin said they would leave the US if George Bush got re-elected? Yeah, well they’re still here, aren’t they?
Last year Collins revealed that he’ll never play the drums again due to a painful spinal injury. He can’t even hold the sticks because his vertebrae have crushed his spinal cord after so many years of playing. But he’s not going away. The old rocker can still sing and continues to perform.
