Google Dumps the Old Guy

The Return of Sergey
Longtime Google CEO Eric Schmidt is being replaced by by the company’s co-founder Sergey Brin. According to Mr. Schmidt’s post on the google blog, he will assume the post of Executive Chairman.

Like all good tech companies, once an executive reaches a certain age, the company decides that he’s no longer able to think as an innovator. Old guys get pushed out to do sales and PR. At 55, Schmidt has had a long run for an executive that has been brought in from the outside.

From the WSJ:
Mr. Schmidt joined Google as an experienced technology executive charged with helping the two young founders navigate Silicon Valley and the business world. Their success had sparked many others in Silicon Valley to follow the same management model.

In a nod to how he was regarded as Google’s elder statesman, Mr. Schmidt tweeted wryly after the management shifts were announced, “Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!”

It’s a bitch gettin’ old.
