Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra
Last night we took my dad to the Summer Pops – San Diego style. What’s better than spending a summer evening sitting outdoors next to the water with the downtown skyline on the right, San Diego Bay on the left, the aircraft carrier Midway in the distance, listening to the best music of the 80’s and getting to sing along with Dennis DeYoung?
The first half of the show the symphony performed well-known classics and music from the movies – Indiana Jones, ET, etc. The second half was all Styx music. We were a little apprehensive before Dennis started singing hoping that he wouldn’t sound like so many other geezer rockers who don’t know when to quit. We were not disappointed! He sounded exactly the same as he did 30 years ago!
My dad had never been to a rock concert before – not surprising since he’s 86. I mean, this is the man who made fun of rock and roll when I was a kid. Back then he would ask, “What the heck are they saying? You can’t understand the words. How could you like a song called Hang on Stupid?” Actually, the song was Hang on Sloopy.
Anyway, the last song performed was Come Sail Away – with a giant fireworks finale! The fireworks were better than the display they had on the 4th. After the show, as we were walking back to the car, my dad said he really enjoyed the concert and he liked the singer because he could understand the words!
Enjoy Best of Times:
