In 1912, the city of Tokyo, Japan sent a gift of 3,000 cherry trees to the city of Washington DC to honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan.
Three years later the United States reciprocated with a gift of flowering dogwood trees.
This year, Washington is planning to send Japan 3,000 dogwood seedlings as a goodwill gesture in support of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
