Cherry Blossom Festival 2012

Awakening by Navin Sarma Photography

In 1912, the city of Tokyo, Japan sent a gift of 3,000 cherry trees to the city of Washington DC to honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan.

Three years later the United States reciprocated with a gift of flowering dogwood trees.

This year, Washington is planning to send Japan 3,000 dogwood seedlings as a goodwill gesture in support of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The annual National Cherry Blossom Festival at the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial draws more than a million visitors each spring.
