I Want Candy

The Battle of the Office Candy Jar
$546 – Estimated annual cost for an office to buy a 55-piece bag of fun-size candy bars every week.

The Wall St. Journal had an article today about candy in the office sabotaging workers efforts to slim down. I can relate. It wasn’t until I worked at Apple that I found out I was addicted to M&M’s. Whenever there was a meeting, there bowls of M&M’s on the table – pounds and pounds of M&M’s. Like Granny Goose said, “betcha can’t eat just one.”

Recently concerns by chocolate lovers all over the world have been raised due to the civil war on the Ivory Coast. Just like blood diamonds we now have blood cocoa. Eww!

According to news reports, Government and rebel leaders of the world’s leading cocoa exporter, Ivory Coast, both siphoned off millions of dollars from the cocoa industry to finance the 2002-03 civil war that divided the once-stable and prosperous country in two, according to a recent report from Global Witness, a London-based group that focuses on resource-fueled corruption.

The government received more than $58 million from institutions and cocoa revenues, while the rebel New Forces pocketed about $30 million since 2004 in taxes and revenues, claims the report titled “Hot Chocolate: How Cocoa fueled the conflict in Côte d’Ivoire.”

Ivory Coast is the world’s leading producer of the commodity, responsible for about 40 percent of global exports, which earned more than $1 billion in 2006.

Hot chocolate, indeed.
